The carat is a unit of weight used to measure gemstones, whereas the karat measures the amount of gold in an alloy based on 24 parts; thus, 14- or 18-karat gold is calculated based on those 24 parts. However, it is also considered acceptable to use the term carat (instead of karat) to indicate gold purity.
